History

Established in 1997, Beker PLC started its business importing and distributing pharmaceuticals and medical supplies throughout Ethiopia. The company quickly grew and became the leading pharmaceutical importer and distributor.

Beker derives its name from its founder and chairman Abubeker A. Ture. Beker launched its operation with just 3 employees and today, that number has grown to over 300 employees.  With all its subsidiaries, the number is above 1,500.

Pharmaceuticals in Ethiopia have always been in short supply. Modern medicine is inaccessible to an overwhelming majority. When Beker started in 1997, there were no more than ten organizations involved in pharmaceuticals. With a large population and minimal
supply, healthcare is largely inaccessible. With affordability being the main challenge, Beker sought out manufacturers abroad that produce quality medicines while minimizing costs.
